Sufism is also about finding peace and tranquility in one’s self through understanding oneself more deeply.

Sufis believe in the idea of oneness and unity among all people and things. This is the reason, they often wear a garment that covers their entire body (sometimes even including their face). How would you feel if you were able to better understand the origin of Sufism? Read this blog to know more about Sufism.

The basics of Sufism?

The notion of Sufism is a religious spirituality and ascetic approach to Islam. Sufis firmly believe in the oneness of Allah (God), the remembrance of Allah, seeking peace and tranquility in one’s self, understanding oneself more deeply, and unity among all people around them. Sufis usually wear garments that cover their entire body so as to not have any distinction between themselves and others.

There are many different types of Sufism with some being more conservative than others. The most famous Sufi scholar was Ibn Arabi who was born in Spain but wrote most of his work in Egypt. He is responsible for developing the idea of Wahdat al-Wujud (unity of being).

The History of Early Sufism in India

Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam that originated in South Asia with the teachings of an Iranian preacher, Hazrat Khawaja Muin-ud-din Chishti Ajmeri. He was born in 1141, and he lived in an era when India was experiencing its golden age. He migrated to India after the Mongol invasion of Persia in 1220, one of the most traumatic events in Islamic history.

Khawaja Muin-ud-din Chishti Ajmeri preached Sufism nearly his entire life when he lived in India (South Asia). He left behind many followers who spread his teachings throughout India and Pakistan, where the majority of Sufi adherents live today. He died in 1236 at Ajmer, Rajasthan, which is now a popular center for Sufis today.

Modern-day Sufism

If you’ve heard of Sufism before, it’s probably because you know a little bit about the history of this spiritual practice. In the past, the word “Sufi” was used as a blanket term to describe those who followed a spiritual path. Such a path blended other cultures with the color of Islam.

In modern days, however, Sufi practices are still there and the most important thing is that the procedures for practicing religious spirituality are still the same.  So what is modern-day Sufism? It’s a way for Muslims to explore their spirituality by concentrating on the more esoteric aspects of Islam.

Why Do People Practice Sufism?

Sufism is an inward-looking faith, which means that it teaches its followers to concentrate on themselves rather than the outer world. For example, someone who practices Sufism might ask themselves questions like: What is my true path in life? How can I be more aware of the divine presence in my life? What does God want for me?

One of the fundamental principles of Sufism is the idea of unity and oneness among all people and things. Or on the other hand, we can say that they believe in the idea of self-denial. They always try to avoid exposure to the public and hide their identity. This is a common practice that they usually wear a garment that covers their entire body with a long gown etc.

Sufi Principles

Sufism is such a religious spirituality and ascetic approach to Islam that has been practiced in the subcontinent for centuries. It’s an inward-looking faith that emphasizes more focus on the inner-self. This is a sort of meditation that focuses the contact with God, understanding the oneness of Allah, and the continuous remembrance of Allah. Sufism is also about finding calmness and peace in one’s self through understanding oneself more deeply.

Dress code

Why use a dress that covers your entire body? For one, it’s a symbol of modesty and a demonstration of your devotion to Islam. It also distinguishes the Sufi from people who are not practicing. Sufi beliefs dictate that everything is created by Allah and should be seen as an extension of Allah’s protection over you.

In order to maintain this connection, many Sufis wear clothing that covers their entire body as a sign of modesty. Sufism is based on beauty from the inside out, so it’s worth considering what message you might be sending with your attire.

Modesty is a dominant factor in the selection of their dress. Sufis try to avoid their exposure to the public. But if people know about them, most of the Sufis prefer to migrate from that place to some other unknown areas.

The Bottom Line

Sufism is a spiritual way of life. It is a practice that does not belong to any particular person, but rather to all who want to adopt it. Sufism was not limited to Pakistan or India only, as it spread to other parts of the world as well. In the current day, Sufism is practiced by a wide variety of people from different cultures, and it is a personal journey that one undertakes to find peace.

In fact, the practice of Sufism is seeking the blessing of Allah. There is a common misunderstanding about the concept of Sufism. Sufis firmly follow the teachings of Islam. They can not go beyond the parameters which Islam has determined to follow. If we look back in history, these were Sufi saints who inspired the people to convert to Islam. So, we can say that Sufis were religious preachers as well who spread Islamic teaching across the world.

The influence of Sufism remained predominant In South Asia, these were Sufis who introduced the Islamic teachings to the people. People started following them because of their teaching and ways of life. There are basic four Sufi schools of thought. These may be a bit different from the ways of their spiritual practices. But the fundamental source of inspiration and guidance is derived from the teaching of Islam.
